Jean-Marc Calvet is a self-taught artist who began painting at a point in his life of extreme crisis. Painting truly saved him – by catharsis and rebirth. In his art, Jean-Marc Calvet exorcises the insanities of his past. His style is brute, provocative, high energy. Colourful compositions of multitude of details are like patchworks of the artist’s memories from which emerges an authentic message of hope.
Jean-Marc Calvet (b.1965 in Nice) lives and works in Nicaragua. He is the subject of an internationally acclaimed documentary by British filmmaker Dominic Allan that recounts his incredible life story. His work was selected to represent Nicaragua at the Biennale of Central America in 2010 and is exhibited in galleries across Europe, the United States and South America.
